About This Blog (and an Introduction)
Hi! Welcome to my blog, which is a place for writers who want to share their ideas with the world, while managing life’s responsibilities. I’m Maya Spikes and I’m a freelance writer who writes non-fiction articles for newsletters, magazines and other publications.
“Why Should I Read This Blog?”
This blog is an advice and lifestyle blog for freelance writers. The purpose is to share ideas of how to improve and support yourself as a writer. I also created this blog to offer support to writers, especially to new writers and to those who may be struggling with various problems and obstacles while pursuing their dreams and writing projects.
A writer’s life isn’t always easy, and I hope this blog will be a community that reassures writers of this message: You don’t have to walk alone while facing the ups and downs of a writing career.
I usually write a weekly blog post. You can check out my latest post every Wednesday.
Some of my posts offer specific writing advice from myself and other writers on how to develop ideas, write better articles/posts, reach more editors/readers/clients among other writing-related issues.
Other posts offer support and encouragement for writers. I also give advice and insight on balancing your responsibilities including a day job (that you may or may not like), relationships, physical/mental health and other issues while being a writer.
So, if you’re ready to finally start writing, then you’ve come to the right place. Or if you feel stuck or “meh” about your job and you’re looking for ways to make more money doing something you love – writing – this blog is for you. Also, if you’re already a writer and you’re just looking for writing advice and inspiration, you’ll find it on this blog.
“This sounds awesome! Wait. Who are you?”
I’m a freelance writer and blogger. I’ve written articles and blog posts for websites, magazines and newspapers for more than 10 years.
I also grew up as a U.S. “army brat” in a military family. My family lived in Pennsylvania and Germany before we moved to North Carolina, where I’ve spent most of my life. After graduating from college, I became a reporter for a few years for a daily newspaper in North Carolina. During that time, I won a North Carolina Press Association Award. I also taught a a freelance writing course with Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, N.C.
